2022 SEMESTER ONE.

DESIGN STUDIO DELTA.

The Over Under Station Library pioneers the connection between architecture and its surroundings, moulding the two rail bridges into a sculptural reality. The rail bridges have been pulled apart, one being pulled up while the other being brought

down to ground level. The new train levels become surreal part of the library’s experience. The structure combines two extruding volumes connected over a suspended mass.

The earlier assignments in the semester were crucial in the development of the final concept as it is derived after the sloping ‘Architectural Fragment’ sculpture outside Melbourne’s state library; which was heavily researched in the preceding project.

The structure combines in equal measure a frame and a solid construction with a resulting interior of pillars, beams and walls that all express the architectural and sculptural concept of the building. The massing's were inspired by precedents shown to the left and the earlier brutalism concept created by Claude Parent’s Villa Drusch in 1963.

The creativity of design is manifested in the lecture theatre, hoisted above the lowered track, utilising the slope of the mass as a base; as well as the terrace, where the city and the yarra are culminated in a single view.

SUBJECT OVERVIEW.

Underlying the undergraduate design course is the development of both design thinking and dexterity with tools and techniques. The focus of this design subject being on generating design ideas, translating them into architectural forms, spaces, materials and programs. Through a semester long project, we were made to design a Library located in Enterprize Park, in Melbourne's CBD. A constant point of reference and inspiration through all projects in the studio were the library and the city. will be seen as sites of rich meaning and potential.
